SWITZERLAND’S GRANDE DIXENCE HYDROPOWER DAM GETS NEW MOTORS

30 June 2017

May 2017 – Grande Dixence S.A., a Sion, Switzerland-based hydropower producer, ordered an 8.84 MW synchronous motor from Jeumont Electric. The new motor will replace an existing motor at the Stafel pumping station, which feeds the Grande Dixence hydropower dam.

The order was part of the contract Grande Dixence S.A. and Jeumont Electric signed in 2016 for three motors and a complete backup unit that can rapidly take over in the event that one of the main units fails, minimizing water losses. The Stafel pumping station, located at the foot of the north face of the Matterhorn, plays a crucial role in the Grande Dixence dam complex. The three existing motors had, for the past 50 years, powered three 3.3 cu. m. pumps to carry 270 million cu. m. of water—around 13% of total annual volume—to the dam*.
